Middletown, CT – July 13, 2018 – Visitors to Vet’s Pool and Crystal Lake may notice something new this season upon entering the venues. Each location has a digital display board which provides information about dangerous UV (ultraviolet) levels in real time. The display, manufactured by SOLaware™ Technologies, is a modular sun safety education system that is designed to educate about the danger of unprotected sun exposure, the appropriate use of sunscreen, and other preventative steps to help lower the risk of skin cancer. The displays are jointly sponsored by the Middletown Health Department and the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center.
Louis Carta, Community Health Educator, Middletown Health Department said that skin cancer prevention is a primary public health initiative.
“With the incidence of skin cancer on the rise, our goal is to encourage the use of sunscreen and other protective measures, especially during the summer months. Having these displays at the point of exposure will help remind everyone about the importance of using sunscreen and applying it as needed,” said Carta.
The Middelsex Hospital Cancer Center always encourages sun safety. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and is caused by too much exposure to UV rays.
“The good news is that you can do a lot to protect yourself and your family from UV rays,” says Justin Drew, Director of the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center. “The SOLaware™ Tech system will help provide real-time feedback to families about current sun exposure risks, which increases awareness and prompts action to reduce that risk.”
Middletown joins Darien, North Haven, Wallingford, and other communities utilizing the SOLaware™ Displays this summer. SOLaware™ Technologies’ mission is to raise awareness about sun exposure via digital technologies.
